Figley is a psychologist, family and marriage therapist and Professor of Social Work at Florida State University since 1989. He heads the Traumatic Stress Intervention and Training Program. He has written over 150 works on traumatology and is Founding President of the International Society of Traumatic Stress.
Psychotherapists frequently work with traumatized clients; people who have experienced various kinds of losses. Professionals treating these individuals with their capacity to empathize, may have various reactions to the immediate or ongoing exposure to their client's traumatic material. The feeling of empathy is at the core of the client therapist relationship; however this response could lead to secondary traumatic stress or compassion fatigue.
