Therapeutic Metaphors
and
Problem Solving

Meet your CEU Requirements

(contact hours)

Myths, fables, stories, fairy tales, lyrics, legends and dreams are all universal metaphors. As far back as recorded history metaphors have been used for teaching and changing ideas.

Shamans, philosophers, and prophets used metaphors for changing ideas and effecting behavior. Milton H. Erickson MD, the father of hypnosis, often told a story or two to "seed" an idea. He would bridge an association, identify the relevance of the story to the client, and finally offer the patient direct suggestions inside the metaphor.

Many health professionals are not aware of the elegance and power of speaking to the unconscious and often are reluctant to tell metaphors.

Learning Objectives

In this workshop you will

  • Establish and elicit well-formed outcomes for change --
Therapeutic metaphors begin with the Problem. Therapists must understand the nature and characteristics of the Problem and elicit ways the client wants to change.
  • Revisit your creativity --
Therapists use some form of metaphors with every word spoken to the client's unconscious mind. In this workshop therapists will use their creativity with specific designs and delivery.
  • Design and create therapeutic metaphors directed specifically for the desired outcomes of the client.
  • Deliver metaphors in and out of trance.
